The syllabus names this explicitly, but just wanted to remind you that the "readings" for this week are GLEE, the Fox television show.

You can find these on NETFLIX.  If you don't have an account you can get a free month by signing up so it will not cost you anything.  Or it will cost $7.99 for one month if you have been a member before. Or they are available for purchase on itunes as well for $1.99 each (3 episodes for under $6.00).

You blog post should analyze the episodes (which deal with LGBT bullying issues) using the texts we have read in class -- it is kind of like an extended media artifact!

On Hallowed Ground

"On Hallowed Ground" from TNT. 

The last line of the documentary asks us to consider the politics of basketball, representation and ideology:

 "For the players on the hallowed ground at Rucker Park, there is no life after basketball. Because life is basketball. The question is, is that the problem or the solution?" 

What do you make of this?

Other questions to consider:

What does it mean for the question of race and representation that the white coach is called, "The Teacher?"

Tricia Rose Readings

Happy sunny weekend, folks!

Here are the readings for this week by Dr. Tricia Rose, one of the most significant contemporary scholars on Black youth culture.  I recommend that you google her, and check out the other works she has authored as well.

The first is this short YouTube text that offers a great introductory context to issues of representation and Blackness, in the context of contemporary hip hop. It gives some history and makes an strong argument about race, class and gender.

The second one is a Q&A with Tricia Rose from TIME magazine.

Use both of these for your blog this week.

Final Project Models

FINAL PROJECTS 2011

No reading this week....

Hi everyone.... hope you had a good break!

There is not reading assignment for 3/18, but we would like you to start thinking about your final project in this class.

The midterm project was designed to help you show us what you have learned up to this point and it focused on the ACADEMIC TEXTS as the center of the product, with media and digital tools surrounding it.

The final project is also a chance for you to show us what you know, but it will use a MEDIA TEXT as the center of the project, with the academic texts and digital tools surrounding it.

(In many ways, the final project is just an extended Media Artifact:  choose a text or media site about teenagers that appeals to you and spend some time analyzing how it teaches us about teenagers in relation to everything you have learned this semester.)

More details in class, but for now, just start brainstorming what kind of media text you want to choose.  Anything goes as long as it focuses on representations of teenagers. PLEASE POST YOUR IDEAS ON YOUR BLOG AS YOUR WRITING ASSIGNMENT FOR THIS WEEK.

Reading for Week #6

The reading for next week (Feb 26/28) is by Dr. Mike Wesch. 

You can read the article here...  or you can choose instead to watch Dr. Wesch deliver an 18 minute TEDx Talk that talks about the same issue.  Use one of these texts as the focus of your blog.



You might also want to take a few minutes to check out his website and see what it looks like to use/respect media as a way to help students learn and produce NEW, ALTERNATE REPRESENTATIONS of knowledge.
